The College CEO: Are you focused?
“ You get what you focus on, so focus on what you want.”
How are we already done with January! You know what they say “It is amazing how fast time flies while your running around like a crazy lady”.
To say that I underestimate how busy I would be this semester would be a major understatement. A challenging course load, a pretty much full time job at Galvanize and of course Trader Jack has been the most amazing experience but also insanely busy. Not quite the spring semester I thought would have as a senior but it's everything I could have asked for. When leaving Draper University, it all kinda seemed like a blur and I knew that I had a lot of work in front of me!
The last three weeks, I have been working on Trader Jack every spare second I have. The ten minutes in between class, breaks at work, sending email while I am on the bike at the gym, just scraping up every chance I get. Which includes all weekends and days off of class.
I have found it hard to focus in class when all I think about is the future of Jack. In the past, when I heard that entrepreneurs often drop out of school, I never understood why. Until now, I understand. How can focus on reading a textbook for portfolio management, when what I really want to be do is building the company to one day be in someone’s investment portfolio. Before I scare my parents, whom I hope are reading this, I am not dropping out of school. I only have 67 more classes to attend but I mean who is counting anyways.
It’s just a weird limbo to be in, so much too still learn but so so eager to go build things that matter. I think the quote says it perfectly “ You get what you focus on, so focus on what you want.” As an entrepreneur you get to pick what you do and sometimes that hard but it's a great piece of freedom. I am working on figuring out how to both focus on my studies and focusing on building the career I want after graduation.
Short term sacrifice for long term success, being crazy busy this semester allows me to escape the cubicle after graduation and focus on what I want.
The work is starting to pay off, I now officially have a company filled with the state of Colorado. Probably the most exciting piece of mail I have ever gotten, the LLC filing for Trader Jack. Which came last week, making this all seem a little more official and easier to explain to people why I am not applying for after graduation jobs.
Now it’s time to focus on the long to-do-list for today. Keep focusing on what you want.
Cheers,
Courteney
